Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the first time ever in the history of our school, my students are excited about advanced level science and math classes! My classroom is collaborative and supportive to ensure my enthusiastic students can succeed in every way possible.
Our school is located in an area of Los Angeles that experiences extreme poverty.
Accordingly, our students face many challenges and adversities on a daily basis, including violence, crime, gangs, drugs, and hunger. The young people that walk through our school gates every day bring with them many barriers to succeed that other children their age are usually sheltered from. They are smart, creative, innovative, and capable of greatness on many different levels. We are always looking for new and exciting ways to tap into these aspects of their personalities and inspire them to push themselves. Because of where they live and the experiences they're exposed to regularly, a lot of our students lack the confidence to dream and believe in a better life. The teachers of our school see it as our job to provide them with as many educational experiences as possible, in the hope of igniting a fire inside of them, and therefore helping them realize the great things they are capable of!
My Project
My intention for these Chromebooks is two-fold. By bringing 35 Chromebooks into my classroom, you will allow my courses to go paperless, thereby allowing my science classes to step into an environmentally friendly educational setting. Secondly, and albeit more pertinent for the purposes of this donation, you will allow my students to engage in STEM activities with a 1:1 computer/student ratio. Right now, technology is very limited at my school and we have been struggling to roll out any kind of STEM program because of this. This donation will revolutionize instruction in my classroom, and will allow students to design and construct their own projects. This project also aims to spark interest in the advanced sciences on our campus. The statistics regarding American students matriculating to STEM fields at the college level is dismal. My students deserve the same exposure to STEM education as anyone else, but we need the technology to make that happen!
As mentioned above, at the moment, access to technology at my school is greatly limited.
This donation will drastically shift the way I teach and the way my students learn. My students are products of a technological age, and they don't learn the way we used to when we were in school. They are begging for technology and they are begging for STEM integration to be brought to our campus. They're bored with the old rote learning style of instruction we're currently limited to. Help us change this!
