My Students

Every morning after we say the pledge, our class recites the school motto. Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Productive. This motto is taken very seriously by everyone. My 3rd grade students are such education sponges, absorbing everything possible to better them selves.

Our school is located in an impoverished, low income area.

It is a Title 1 school, and many students receive free breakfast, as well as lunch. In addition students are provided free lunch throughout the summer months. My students are hungry to learn, many do not have access to computers at home and I am not able to provide what they really need in the classroom. Common Core standards require that student work regularly on electronic devices, yet we have one chrome cart that is shared with four 3rd grade classrooms. When it is my classes turn to use the Chrome books they are so excited, and are fast learners, to important and necessary hot keys that allow them to explore and learn about the world.

My Project

Every morning as part of the Common Core Language Arts rotation, we do what is called the Daily 5 activities. These activities are fun ways for students to practice the spelling, grammar, phonics and writing skills taught that week. With the use of mini i pads students can use specialized apps to practice not only their Language Arts skills but also how to use an electronic device. For the Read to Self portion, students will have exposure to real books such as National Geographic Books and others we cannot afford to put into our class library. Working on Writing apps allow students to journal as well as follow as specific writing prompt. Mini i pads are the perfect supplement to good teaching, and can easily be integrated into our daily classroom routine.

Technology is everywhere, and yet not!

The mini i pads are a way to fully engage all students in practicing important Language Arts skill. They will help open up the world to students that are so impoverished they tend not to travel far from their home. Working with i pads daily will enable students to learn the muchly needed skill of correctly using an electronic device. In addition students will have a learning tool for creating and communicating.
