Our Kindergartners are Ready to Read!

My students need 12 leveled book sets and a predictable text library for a total of 75 kindergarten level books!

My Students

Close your eyes and think of something you love to do, something you do all the time. Open your eyes. Did you think of something you were good at? Or something that constantly frustrates you? Children who find success in reading keep reading and go on to become better readers. Why? Because it's fun!

My students are kindergartners in a city school.

They are are mostly students of color and a large number of them are English language learners. Our school is currently under an improvement plan due to low test scores and this is clear even in kindergarten when most of my students enter school with limited print awareness, basic early literacy skills, and vocabulary. It is essential to target their instruction to make sure they enter first grade as confident, fluent readers, just like first graders in more affluent areas.

My Project

Current research shows that students make the most reading progress when they are given large amounts of time to independently read books in which they know 99% of the words. When reading these types of books, they feel successful, they hear themselves reading with accuracy and fluency, and their brains can focus on understanding what they are reading. Just like you, the more they feel success reading, the more they will read and the better readers they will become. My current classroom has books that I can read to the students during story time, but a limited selection of books easy enough for them to read on their own. I am asking for leveled books at a pre-K to early first grade level to make up my students' classroom library.

Current research says reading independent books on their level is the most important thing young readers must do to become confident fluent readers.

Without these books, my students will not be able to do this. I believe fully that with these books, my students will make dramatic progress. They are energetic, enthusiastic learners who want to be successful. Please help us by making these resources possible.
