The most diverse zip code in America is located in Seattle, Washington. My class of young, energetic and excited learners includes Somali, Ethiopian, Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, African-American and white students. 50% of my class are English Language Learners and many of my students started Kindergarten not knowing their letters and sounds. It is my goal that when my Kindergartners leave me, they will be reading level D predictable text. The teacher's college at Columbia University states that in order to be successful in first grade, a kindergartner must be reading a minimum of a level D. With that knowledge, there is no other choice than to demand of myself, my students and their parents that we reach that goal. I realize closing the achievement gap is going to take exceptionally hard work, but with your help and the adequate resources, I believe it is more than possible. There are no shortcuts.
