Organic Vegetable Garden in the Bronx

My students need 2 sets of shovels, hoes, and pitch forks in order to prepare and maintain an organic vegetable garden at our high school, in The Bronx, NY.

My Students

Many kids in the Bronx have never eaten freshly picked vegetables, let alone grown their own food. Many of my students have never been close enough to nature to have seen a worm or pushed a shovel into the soil. The materials we are hoping to get are hoes, shovels, rakes, and pitch forks.

My students represent the Environmental Club at our high school.

Our club has around 20 students, both boys and girls that range from ninth to twelfth grade. The students come from a lot of different countries, including Pakistan, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Ecuador, Kosovo, Albania, Guyana, Jamaica, and of course the United States.

My Project

We need this equipment to do the digging and weeding of our plot. We need to prepare the plot. We need to dig holes to plant garlic and other bulbs before the soil hardens. In the spring we will be planting seeds indoors and transplanting them when they get bigger using the equipment we are asking for. This equipment will also be used to maintain our garden by ridding it of weeds. We will not use pesticides so we will need to use hoes to remove the weeds manually.

This project is really important.

Kids in the Bronx need to learn what fresh food tastes like. Kids in the Bronx also do not spend enough time in the outdoors, working with their hands, and getting a little dirty. Doing the hard work of gardening and eating the food we produce will inspire these kids to live a more healthy life style.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
