A typical day in my classroom is full of interactive learning. My students are engaged throughout the day with Reading, Math, Writing, etc... My students are allowed to move around the classroom through a routine called Daily 5. The students rotate stations independently meeting individual needs.
My group of 1st graders are an active little group.
Most of the students would prefer to not sit in their seats all day long. In turn, I don't want them to. I want my students to be actively engaged. It is proven that if students are actively engaged in what they are learning, they will succeed at a higher level. We are a K-2 school that consists of about about 600+ students in a small community. Our school has high expectations and we are all about student growth and active engagement. We believe that our students are our highest priority. We are also a Leader in Me school. We strive to create leaders within our student body. If students are not allowed to engage in their learning and be active in every aspect of their school, we can't expect them to be responsible leaders in their community later in life. The students have to believe in themselves and know that it's okay to make mistakes. The students truly believe they are little kids who do BIG things.
My Project
You would see my students independently moving around the classroom using markers, colored pencils, and stamps to complete sight words and spelling words. My students would then move to the writing station where they will use the take to your seat writing prompts, the writing journals, and the writing centers. My students would then move to the listening staton where they use CD players to listen to books and follow along to build fluency. By using the word work supplies the students practice spelling their spelling words and their sight words/high frequency words. The writing station supplies provide prompts for the students to write from. Writing is a station that students don't enjoy as much as others, but with the new supplies I'm hoping the love of writing is instilled in them by having a variety of writing media. The listening cd's will help the students learn to read fluently by listening to fluent readers read from the cd's. Having these resources will expand their learning.
Donations for this project will greatly improve my classroom in many different ways.
Not only will it supply us with many more resources to use in each station, but it will also help me to create a Writing Station that makes students want to write every day. My students use all the resources that I have asked for only a daily basis. When your students are asking to do Daily Five, you know something must be right. My students are becoming independent learners with goals in mind as they work.
