Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I HATE SCHOOL!" the student yelled, storming into my office. "Why? What's going on?" I asked, motioning for him to sit down. "Everyone hates me! My teacher doesn't like me! I don't have any friends!""That can't be true - let's talk about what's going on..."

This is how many of my counseling sessions begin.

Being a social worker in an elementary K-5, NYC public school I deal with children in crisis on a daily basis. Many of these children have difficulty navigating social situations and understanding the nuances of basic social skills. They also have problems with regulating their anger and need tips and strategies to help them learn how to manage complex feelings.

My Project

Children learn best when material is presented to them in a fun, interactive way. I believe that the materials I've requested will allow them to be able to learn the skills they need to be successful in a non-threatening and interesting manner. With these resources I will be able to keep counseling sessions relevant to their needs while challenging to them to learn and apply the skills they are learning.

These items will be able to help children to learn how to make a friend and to understand that teachers have rules and expectations for each student.

Simply put - these materials will help the children I work with have better days in school. They will no longer waste precious time arguing, running out of classrooms or being sent to the principal for behavioral issues. These resources will make a positive difference to these students! A difference that will last a lifetime.
