Old Vs. New Technology

My students need compasses, 2 graphing calculators, and other resources for a deeper, richer understanding of geometry.

My Students

New math, old math, this math, that math! All the math is the same; it is just how we choose to look at it that differentiates! Math is difficult enough for some students, so I am a firm believer of having students look at math in many different ways using many different tools.

My students are hardworking children from all over a major economically challenged city in Ohio.

Some of my students ride the public transportation for over an hour to get to school, yet they do it every day (yes, my attendance actually is close to 100% on a daily basis!), and they do it for a longer day than their friends who are in this same district (we go 50 minutes longer than the other schools), and they do it for a longer school year (we go four weeks longer than the other schools in the district.) Why do they do it? Because they love science, and we are a specialty school that focuses on science and medicine. Other than that, they are the normal kids in an urban setting, still loving to play sports or go to the movies or anything else regular kids do. But these children have found a safe haven of like minds, and that is why they will also come to school on a Saturday at 8 am to be part of the math club, or do extra experiments, or even just get tutoring.

My Project

Texas Instruments has developed a new and wonderful new tool. I don't even consider the TI-nSpire a calculator, because it has so many more capabilities. It is more of a hand-held computer! I have also written for a grant to get a Navigator system that will allow me to connect and transmit information from these hand-helds. On the other side, something much less flashy would be the old-fashioned compasses and materials to do geometric constructions. While not as technologically exciting, doing constructions gives students a much more concrete understanding of not only the shapes, but also the formulas, calculations, and proofs used with the shapes. I have also requested some template books so the students can do enrichment constructions to help improve or extend their learning. My classroom is known for having puzzle manipulatives. Students love to stop in during lunch or before or after school to play with these puzzles. I firmly believe that they help them think in different ways.

I am a firm believer of using all types of demonstrations to clarify understanding of mathematics.

I have deliberately chosen new and old technology to be able to teach both ways, and so the students are able to see it from both perspectives. I also believe the use of both of these tools also make it fun for the students. Learning is so much easier when you are also having fun. Having a collection of different manipulative puzzles for students to play with helps them think in imaginative ways.
