Nook, Nook! Who's There?

My students need first crack at the newest books of their favorite series, so I need a class NOOK to rapidly deliver the books before my kids lose interest.

My Students

"I'm done!" Bam. He victoriously slams book 3 of the Gregor the Overlander series onto his desk. Behind his satisfied smile, I know that this student, one of my strongest readers, has read and digested every word of the book. The inevitable question is next, "So, Ms. M., where's book 4?"

Book 4 is probably on a shelf at Borders.

Unfortunately, we've seen our Barnes and Noble and the two closest Borders stores close in the last year. Gary, Indiana is certainly not the mecca of literacy, and it sends me scrambling to far suburbs when kids need new books. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that I have voracious readers. I dream of classes full of kids like these, the ones who read the first book of a series like Hunger Games or Sharon Draper's trilogy and are hooked, line and sinker. They come to me with my copies of books, dog eared and sometimes damp (no idea), begging for the next text like the literary junkies I've encouraged them to become. What more can a teacher ask for? This enthusiasm keeps me driving far from my home to spend too much money on books for a cause I am proud to champion.

My Project

But it's getting harder and harder. The extinction of bookstores sends me scrambling to the internet, battling shipping charges, back orders, and texts out of print. I can't risk my students losing interest in their series, can't risk them sliding back toward Wii or Playstation or who-knows-what trouble runs in the streets outside their homes. If there are readers to nurture, I've GOT to nurture them. This brings us to the idea of the class NOOK. This grant also asks for a protective case and a screen cover. With the NOOK, I can download books at lightning speed, spending the same money (if not less than) I would at a bookstore without the mileage and the late night quests for texts that will be readily available. Since many of my students are gobbling up series, it means that purchasing one ebook will impact several students at once. The NOOK would solve the issue of book accessibility for a dedicated, but exhausted teacher and her book craving middle schoolers.

Gary, Indiana is not a thriving community of vocalizing book lovers.

Part of indulging my students' urgent requests for the next book is me doing my part to recharge our community, the town I both teach and live in. Perhaps in a few years, there'll be a highly vocal community of readers, students grown into adults that can advocate for the return of bookstores and for others to put down their Wii controller and pick up a book: electronic or paperback. A classroom NOOK may be our first step.
