Next Generation Math Part Two

My students need a projector to go along with their document camera.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all recent immigrants. Many of them are refugees and they are all considered low-income. They are working to not only learn English, but also to master content. In my class, we are learning math skills. Many of these skills the students haven't had access to.

Our diverse student population includes students from over 20 countries who speak 29 different languages.

Our goal is to help students learn English while preparing them for college and the workplace. Many of our students have had very limited formal education prior to their arrival in the United States because they grew up in rural towns or refugee camps. It is our responsibility, as their teachers, to help them meet grade level standards, even if they are far behind grade level when they arrive at our school. Our students learn best through hands-on activities and projects, collaborating with each other to learn English through their content areas

My Project

My students need a projector in order to have math presented in a visually compelling nature. This projector is an excellent resource in a Math classroom. Mostly, it will be used to rapidly share high quality student work with everyone in the classroom. By finding a stellar example of student work and sharing it with the class by using the projector, coupled with the Elmo document camera (see Next Generation Math Part One) I can make one student feel like he can really share with the class. This will inspire and challenge other students to really engage in the work of the day.

It is my responsibility to take my students beyond basic math skills and into higher math learning, to help them graduate and gain a love for math.

This means that in my class students need to learn everything they should have learned in years of elementary and middle school, while learning new topics in math. We need a fun, efficient, and exciting way of doing this that celebrates student success and highlights exemplar work. A projector, coupled with an Elmo document camera does just that.
