New Knowledge with Non-Fiction

My students need 30 copies each of TIME magazine and Scholastic News magazines.

This project expired on January 11, 2013.

My Students

Do you remember when you were a child and read a story that forever changed your life? Or learned about news that you as a child could finally understand? These magazines will do exactly what they did for me when I was a child; change my thinking, open my mind and help me understand the world.

My students are an exciting, lively, creative group of 5th graders.

Although my classroom is 92% in poverty, they are extremely motivated and deserve the same opportunity and curriculum that other students receive. They believe in their future and just need others to believe in them too. They are extremely interested in learning about the world and current events. Although they struggle with issues children should not have to be exposed to, they come to school and work harder than most. They deserve every opportunity for success.

My Project

These weekly magazines will greatly impact the learning of my classroom. They will be integrated into a daily reading station using all Non-Fiction. When I've used these magazines before, the students were so excited to be able to take them home and have something that is their own. The magazines are used to summarize, sequence events, and discuss 'real' issues that are happening in our world today. When the TIME for World comes to our classroom, the kids will be ecstatic! It would help bring great discussions on all of the cultures in the classroom and help build the bridge to our world that is so small. At other times it has brought great discussion and debates in our classroom that has lead to social justice projects within our community. These magazines are one of the BEST things in our literacy block.

My students deserve the same access that other students from a higher financial background receives.

Since my school does not have the resources to continue these magazines, I need sponsors that will understand the importance of this project. These magazines will be used daily and be enjoyed by the entire group of students and their families.
