My students need a new collection of reading options that have been personally selected and requested by my 11th grade class. Let's get them excited about reading!

My Students

Every week, I allow some classroom time for silent, sustained reading. Each of my students can choose a book of their choice from my personal library. Unfortunately, my personal library is limited, so my students need your help! Please help my kiddos stay engaged in the act of reading.

My students are in 11th grade, and have entered my room at a wide variety of reading levels.

This makes it extremely important to expose them to entertaining, engaging, young adult books so they are intrinsically motivated to improve their reading abilities. There always seems to be one or two students who point out that they really wish I could add a certain book or a certain genre to my collection. I decided to send around a piece of paper and have the students write down their requests. The list on this Donor's Choose project page has been created with that list in mind! I can't think of a better way to motivate them to read. They'll know these books showed up as a result of their personal interests and requests.

My Project

Each week, I will dedicate part of my class time to silent, sustained reading (SSR). Students will get a chance to take a break from the current curriculum texts and pick their own book of choice. SSR is known to 1) enhance reading enjoyment, 2) increase comprehension, 3) build vocabulary, and 4) improve writing skills. My students will hopefully fall in love with the imaginative stories they explore in this collection, and as a result, fall in love with act of reading. Please be a part of introducing this new joy in their lives!

The positive difference this project makes will be most apparent in the faces of my students.

I've already been fortunate enough to reward them with one set of Donor's Choose funded books this year, and I can't wait to see their excitement when they realize that, once again, the kindness of strangers has granted them an amazing classroom gift. It always feels like Christmas when books arrive, so be ready for some great pictures!
