This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Yesterday I had to ban books from my student's desks. Yes! They were sneaking behind my back during instruction time to READ BOOKS! What a happy problem to have. I was secretly pleased that my students are so in love with books that they can hardly wait until Read to Self time.

On the other hand...my heart was breaking because those few books hiding in their desks were brought from home and were the only few they owned.

Our school is 98% English Language Learners and 98% Title I. We encourage the parents to start home libraries but we also know that can be difficult to do. As I remember my childhood with a full bookcase in my room and stacks of books around the house, I am grateful that I grew up in literature-rich home. My dream is to have that same environment in our classroom. We started our Read Aloud Time at the beginning of the year with the 2nd book in the series, Knight at Dawn. My students fell in love with Jack and Annie and cannot seem to get enough of the series. I only have two books in our classroom library and, invariably, the students are fussing over who gets to read them next. Can I tell you a little-known secret? Teachers are always asking for more books because we often give them away at the end of the year.

My Project

With the funding of this project my students will have daily access to the entire series of the Magic Tree House to read at their leisure during our Read to Self and Read to Someone time. Students love the books because they are full of adventure and humor. Teachers love the books because they teach history and science and are so well written. The Magic Tree House books span the whole 2nd Grade Guided Reading Level which makes them perfect for my classroom. If a student can read one of these books on their own it means they read at a 2nd Grade reading level. I also requested the CD's so that my English Language Learners could follow along to the audio as they read the words. This makes these wonderful books accessible to my students who read below grade level.

My ambitious but attainable goal this year is to have all my students at a 3rd Grade Level in reading.

In the fall, most of my class read at a K to 1st grade level. Our mid year testing shows that 12 are still below 2nd grade level. My intense focus on literacy is working but we still have a ways to go. Remember, my students need to be at a 3rd grade level by May! I believe that introducing this series to my classroom will be the motivation that will move them to the next level.
