My students need a globe, a pair of world maps, and eight world atlases in order to have the necessary tools to begin their discovery of the world around them.

My Students
Everyone has the dream to travel the world, however not everyone has the ability. There is a vast world out there that I wish to introduce to my students that may otherwise never have the opportunity to see and experience.
The school that my students attend is one that is located in small-town South Carolina.
The school is considered a High Risk school due to low test scores and below average graduation rates. The school is also considered a High Poverty area, with the vast majority of students being able to apply for free or reduced lunch. Many of my students have less than adequate home situations, and several come to school to eat their only two meals of the day. Many of these students do not realize that there is anything outside of their hometown, as they have never had the opportunity to travel. Nearly 80% of the students I have spoken to have never been the coastline, which is only eighty miles away.
My Project
I hope to use these supplies to create a Geography lesson that will allow the students to transform one classroom wall into a large world map. By using the world maps the students will learn the layout of the world. Using the world atlas the students will be able to recreate the flags of each individual country of the world, and list several of the important facts about this country (such as creation date, leader, leading political party, etc.). Each student will then teach their peers on what they have discovered and then place their completed work on the wall in the correct location of the world that we will be creating. I will be able to supplement all work with visual or auditory tools from each of the regional areas of the world we may be studying at that time.
This project will hopefully make the students realize that there is a big world out there to be explored by them.
These kids must realize that they are not required to stay in their poverty stricken town for their entire lives and can pursue dreams outside of South Carolina and outside of the United States. As things are right now, I will have difficulty teaching the students about the places outside of our small town without the proper resources. Thank you for taking the time to read this..
