Morning Girl or Star Boy?

My students need 150 copies of Morning Girl by Michael Dorris to begin their unit on creation myths from around the world.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I dream too hard," the main character from Morning Girl tells readers. My students also dream, but dream to learn about other places, cultures, and ways of life. At the beginning of the year, we begin with texts that ask the question, "how can we explain the world around us?"

My students come from a variety of backgrounds themselves.

I teach ninth grade at a high-needs school in New York, and every ninth grader walks into our school with his or her own story to tell. It is a privilege to learn the stories of these students throughout their first year in high school.

My Project

The first unit of study introduces my students to the course global literature and creates the foundation for two years of study in their English and History classes. The story Morning Girl, about life on a Bahamian island in 1492, is a great centerpiece to this unit. It tells the main character's story and along the way, shares insights on a way of life foreign to us. It also speaks to identity, and how one's identity is forged through the culture we are a part of as well as where we come from.

Most importantly, the story of Morning Girl, helps students appreciate that everyone's story is different, yet we all experience a bond to our origins.

I hope to use this book in our class to open up students to others, and to help them explore their own identities.
