Money Mysteries: Fun with Finance

My students need a laptop computer to learn the basics of financial literacy.

My Students

Children are surrounded by bleak economic news and yet so little of it makes sense to them. It's time to demystify some of those economic stories and teach children concepts of sound financial literacy. This will engage the students in a way that encourages further investigation of finance.

My third grade students are diverse and come from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds.

The common ground is their excitement for learning, especially when it includes technology and project-based learning. We are from the borough of Queens in NYC and our borough represents one of the most multicultural populations in the country. That only emphasizes our global perspective, but young children need to interpret the world in ways that are accessible to them. Finance, economics, and literacy are inextricably linked, and what better way to gain a better glimpse of the world than through math, finance, and purchasing power through the lens of a child? These are tough economic times and young children could be made to feel more secure if they can understand the world around them.

My Project

I am requesting a laptop computer that will allow my young students to explore children's sites that explain money, economics, and finance. The students will use the computer to investigate age appropriate sites that are bookmarked for them (a time saver for young children and a must) and create presentations that explain what they have learned. We would project these findings but need a new laptop that can handle the new plug-ins, software and features that older machines cannot readily display.

What does it mean to save money?

How can one create a budget and determine how to spend wisely the money one has? Is there an online calculator that can help learn the math (there is)? It is never too early to teach financial literacy to children, to empower them to make good decisions, and to encourage them to engage in a field that will be useful throughout their lives. Their futures depend on it.
