My Students

Einstein didn't use flashcards! Kids today are learning how to take tests and not how to apply their skills in "the real world". What good are math skills if you don't know how or when to apply them? Kids need to learn skills that can be used in their lives forever.

My 22 students attend public school.

Budgets have been completely cut and coupled with the pressures of state testing little resources are devoted to making learning enjoyable and actually useful! My kids are a hardworking bunch who have taught me the value of authentic instruction- teaching them to learn by doing things that serve a purpose. They enthusiastically have fundraisers to help our environment but it's always interesting to see how unfamiliar they are with money in a real-world setting.

My Project

I am requesting materials to teach personal finance skills such as "pretend" checkbooks & money kits. Checkbooks will be used to deposit/withdraw money into accounts based on learning & social behaviors. Bonuses will be awarded for homework & participation. The classroom "store" will open so children can make purchases from their accounts. They will learn to save for big items such as homework passes or computer time. They will increase "funds" by investing in the stock market. Students will use bordettes on their own poster stores to "sell" goods or services. They will determine how to set prices and monitor profit and loss. We will also practice elapsed time by determining how many hours their stores need to be open to raise a certain amount of money. Word problem cards & play money will be at our math center- there will be problems & a rotating "cashier". Kids will purchase jolly ranchers/erasers/etc with their money. Prices will change weekly.

It's very important that children not only learn computation skills for the classroom but are able to apply them in a practical setting.

At book fairs & sales I have observed 5th graders not knowing how to add money or determine if they have enough. These same children can add on paper. It's essential that students learn for life and not just for tests. These materials will teach children real-life application of math skills in an authentic manner.
