My Students

Imagine that you are in a classroom in which the teacher and students are speaking a language that you do not understand. That is how my 1st grade English Language Learners feel sometimes.

My students are 1st grade English Language Learners.

They are very motivated students who have such a desire to learn but lack the academic English skills they need to be successful in the mainstream classroom. Our school is in a high poverty area and is around 25% Hispanic and 85% free and reduced lunch. My students need books to learn about Monarch butterflies.

My Project

My students are mostly Hispanic and the majority of them are from Mexico and Central America. I would like to integrate the Monarch butterfly migration into my English classroom since the butterflies migrate to that area each fall. The students will learn more about where they are from, geography skills as well as English language skills through reading and writing using the textbooks I am requesting. Students love to learn when they have personal connections to the material.

The books I am requesting will grasp my Hispanic English language learners attention and help them relate to their personal lives.

It is a topic that they will continue to want to learn more about each year and will also gain English language skills in the process.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
