Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love seeing math in action. It makes them understand math in a way they never thought possible.
My geometry students learn best by doing and teaching each other.
I teach in an urban Title I school in New York. Many of our students receive free/reduced lunch, and most do not have access to technology at home.
Many of my students entered high school without an understanding of basic math skills. Using technology and hands-on activities not only helps keep them engaged, but also helps them see why mathematics is so important in our world.
My Project
Taking a trip to a museum will give students the chance to see how mathematics illuminates the patterns that abound in our world.
"The National Museum of Mathematics strives to enhance public understanding and perception of mathematics. Its dynamic exhibits and programs will stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of mathematics. The museum'ÃÂÃÂs activities will lead a broad and diverse audience to understand the evolving, creative, human, and aesthetic nature of mathematics."
My students will participate in the Graph Theory session, where they will learn the many shades of graph coloring problems, including how to use graphs to color a map so that no two regions that share a border have the same color.
There are many museums out there devoted to art, history, and even science, but there is only one devoted to math.
I want my students to see the importance of math, and how it can be used in a variety of ways to create and explain amazing things in our world.
This trip will give them the opportunity to meet with many mathematicians who can help them see why math matters, something that is at the forefront of my classroom.
