Meeting The Literacy Needs of Kindergartners, Part One

My students need 6 copies of each of 29 different early readers series titles to help them improve their reading comprehension and fluency.

Many experts believe that kindergarten is the most important year of school. A successful year in kindergarten lays the foundation for future education by solidly supporting each child's social, emotional and cognitive development. The vast disparity in the backgrounds and experiences of the students in my school exacerbates the difficulty in meeting the needs of each child. For example, fifty percent of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced lunch, and these students often come to school with minimal exposure to language, print rich environments, and have never been a member of a school community of learners. Some students have been enrolled in up to two years of preschool, and these students often have had exposure to 1000 books or more by the time they are five years old.

My greatest challenge is differentiating my instruction so that each of my students realizes the gains that they are capable of making. In this proposal, which is part one of a two part proposal, I am asking for the materials necessary to meet the needs of the learners in my class who come to me having already developed the skill set necessary to become readers. Part two will be a request for materials necessary for those students who need materials to support their emerging literacy skills.

I have requested multiple copies of series books to foster the comprehension strategies and increase the fluency level of my early readers in guided reading groups. The repetition in the language, plots, characters, and settings of these books will scaffold my fledgling readers' early attempts to read. I have also included sets of non-fiction books to support the varied interests of all of these early readers.
