Maximize Productive Class Time With a Great Pencil Sharpener

My students need pencils, colored pencils, paper and a quiet, durable, high-efficiency electric pencil sharpener to increase productive class time and learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember those old wall-mounted mechanical pencil sharpeners? They take forever, eat up half the pencil and make a lot of noise, disrupting the flow of the lesson. That was my classroom until that old sharpener broke completely. Now my students have to leave the room just to sharpen their pencil!

I teach World History and Economics to 11th and 12th graders at a large, high-poverty urban high school.

The student population at my school is the most diverse in the our city, with students from over 40 different countries from around the world. My students are creative, talented, resilient and full of potential. Most of my students cannot afford to keep buying school supplies throughout the year and they rely on me to lend them pencils, paper and other basic materials. Many of them are also significantly below grade level. They need every second of instructional time that they can get so they will be ready for graduation, college, careers and the responsibilities of being a world citizen. Something as simple as a good pencil sharpener can add up to hours of additional productive class time over the course of a semester.

My Project

The X-ACTO TeacherPro electric pencil sharpener was designed by teachers for teachers. It includes a heavy-duty motor for high-volume classroom use. It is specially built to operate quietly in order to avoid disruption. It has safety mechanisms and an AutoStop feature to prevent over-sharpening of pencils. This device will allow students to quickly and quietly sharpen their pencils and get back to learning. I am also requesting some pencils to use with the sharpener, since many students do not have their own writing utensils. Likewise, I am requesting recycled filler paper that students can write on with the aforementioned pencils. I am also requesting an assortment of colored pencils for shading in maps, making timelines and constructing poster projects. Finally I am requesting a small hand-held sharpener as a back-up and to prevent traffic jams at the electric sharpener. In a more affluent school district, these items might be supplied by the school. We do not have that luxury.

This pencil sharpener and accessories may not seem like much, but they will help equip students with the basics they need to work productively and learn without disruptions.

This will result in increased instructional time, productivity and learning for students who cannot afford to fall behind at a time in their lives when college, career opportunities and adult responsibilities await them just around the corner. Thank you so much for helping improve my students chances for success.
