Math & Science Enrichment

My students need dry-erase grids for practice with making bar graphs, and a weather tracker for a hands-on way to track the national weather.

My Students

Save paper, save trees, and encourage revisions of sub-standard work at the same time. That's what we'll do if we can use pre-gridded wipe boards to perfect our bar-graph construction. Additionally, kids will dramatically improve their understanding of the weather if they can track its trends.

I have a class of 25 students hailing from many corners of the world: Korea, Japan, Iran, Mexico and China, not to mention the origins of their parents.

We work very hard to maintain an overall school average in the top 5% of Los Angeles Unified School District.

My Project

One downside to teaching the intricacies of making bar graphs, a skill I consider still relevant even in our age of computer-aided graphics, is that it feels cruel to ask a student to start over when their graph winds up with errors of calibration or neatness. No matter how carefully instruction is delivered, several students invariably flub their scales, neglect proportional spacing, or are just plain messy. Fixing problems like that requires that they start completely over; taxing their patience, straining our schedule, and wasting paper. Pre-gridded wipe boards eliminate these downsides. Students can make adjustments easily, and even enjoyably. Now, we can do away with the tedium of drawing axes and erasing errors on fragile paper, and focus instead on improving the quality of their work. Finally, the addition of a hands-on, manipulative weather tracking station will help make the concepts more concrete, rather than just abstract notions they take notes or watch films on.

Making a graph with a spreadsheet program is an important skill.

So is being able to plan out and execute a graph by hand, and it’s that skill that is atrophying. Here’s a way to keep it alive and vibrant! Possibly because we live in L.A., weather remains one of the most abstract concepts we try to teach. Sadly, our yearly test scores attest to that difficulty. This center would help the kids make connections and get the “big picture” as they replicate the weather patterns in real time.
