See what Mrs. M. is requestingMy students need basic tools and manipulatives, like protractors and volume cubes, as well as games and activities to get them excited about math.

To earn a college degree, you must pass college-level math. Whether you want to be an artist, a zoologist or anything in between, math is a gatekeeper. My students have the desire to go to the college -- we need to get them there by putting tools in their hands to build skills and knowledge.
The majority of my fifth-grade students live in poverty.
Most are performing below grade level in math. Many live in neighborhoods where violence is a constant and have seen violence first-hand. Despite the challenges in their lives, they come to school everyday ready to learn. Even though few of them have a close friend or family member who has attended college, my students have set the goal of going to college. The majority of them will be the first in their families to attend college when they achieve this goal. Fifth grade is a pivotal year for my students. They need to master many concepts to be ready for middle school and on track for college. We have our work cut out for us, but by the end of the year, I will have a classroom of students who are excited about math and confident in their abilities to tackle challenging math problems -- math maniacs, if you will.
Most of the resources will be used during my math workshop time. During this time, I meet with small groups of students to help them understand the concepts they are still struggling to understand. Math manipulatives will help me bring concepts to life. In addition, I can integrate games and activities into different stations to help students build fluency, review concepts and apply knowledge and skills to real-world situations -- and have fun while doing so!
Students have 100 minutes of math instruction per day.
Through a combination of activities, I am confident I can get them up to grade level and ready for middle school (and eventually college). I need resources for students to visualize abstract concepts, but, frankly, I also need the resources to make math fun. I want my students to like, or even love, math and view themselves at mathematicians.
