The majority of my fifth-grade students live in poverty. Most are performing below grade level in math. Many live in neighborhoods where violence is a constant and have seen violence first-hand. Despite the challenges in their lives, they come to school everyday ready to learn. Even though few of them have a close friend or family member who has attended college, my students have set the goal of going to college. The majority of them will be the first in their families to attend college when they achieve this goal. Fifth grade is a pivotal year for my students. They need to master many concepts to be ready for middle school and on track for college. We have our work cut out for us, but by the end of the year, I will have a classroom of students who are excited about math and confident in their abilities to tackle challenging math problems -- math maniacs, if you will.
