My Students

Technology is essential for the future and it is, unfortunately, still not readily available to all.

Most of my students come from a very low income area and many live with relatives.

They are not always able to access technology at home or even at school because of our large population of students. The school has around 2500 students and is at 115% capacity with an extreme shortage of computer labs. Many of the students need the differentiation and exposure to technology that a class set of laptops can give them. Our graduation benchmark has found the digital age, but it is a very daunting task to some students as they have never had the ability to type a full essay on a computer before, and again, having the class set of laptops will allow them exposure to do that and learn various other skills so they can be more successful.

My Project

Students will be using the laptops in their cooperative learning groups for multiple things. Our curriculum has an online component that is not used by most of the teachers since we do not have the resources. However, after taking a training on how to use the digital component, I would like to be able to incorporate it into the classroom more. This would give my students exposure for not only their state exam at the end of the year, but will also give them the ability to interact digitally with the texts we cover. The students will also be using the laptops for research and to work on projects so that the class can be more self contained. Activities are oftentimes passed over because of the lack of availability of computers at the school, and this would help to make sure that the students would be able to use them when needed. Lastly, students will have the opportunity to work on typing skill and their essays so they can gain the skills necessary to become successful typists.

Many of these students have only known poverty.

By donating to this project it will bring something into the lives of many of these students that they would not be able to access otherwise. They will get a first class experience in education where as without them, they could graduate still lacking in skills that are necessary in today's technology driven world.
