My Students

"Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent” said Victor Hugo. Most of my students are nonverbal and music is an excellent way for them to express themselves.

I have a group of eight students with various special needs including Down Syndrome, autism, and students with developmental delays.

While they attend their zoned elementary school, their needs are significant enough to require a self-contained special education classroom.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of musical instruments and Cd's so my students will have the tools they need to express themselves musically. The endless positive effects music has on a child's development is widely acknowledged today. What you may not be aware of is how wonderful it is for students with special needs. I have had several students with autism who were totally nonverbal and suddenly sang the chorus of a song. Often, music is what breaks open the wall of silence and before you know it, they are speaking in words and then sentences. There is no teaching tool as powerful as music. Even for students who are verbal...everyone loves and responds to music!

My amazing students are fighting against two disabilities in their life - the disability they were born with, and living in poverty.

Our school is a Title I school, which signifies that they live in a low-income area. They often have very little enrichment at home and everyone knows that our schools are in dire need of funding. These children deserve some of the same opportunities to learn as those in upper-income areas, especially since they need extra help overcoming their disabilities.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
