I teach students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Most of my students this year have no other disabilities, so the sky is the limit for them! They are such a neat group of kids- so full of personality and love. They are no different than typically developing children other than their mode of communication, which is primarily American Sign Language (ASL). However, it is not uncommon for a hearing loss to go undetected or misdiagnosed for many years which is what happened with several of my students. Because of this late diagnosis, many crucial years of language development were missed which results in significant academic and communicative delays.
