Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how boring skill and drill math practice was? My students don't like it either. This is our chance to make math engaging and fun!
I teach 24 amazing, inquisitive and energetic second graders in a low income public school.
Over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. These children are from very diverse ethnic, social, and income backgrounds: Hispanic, African-American, Asian, Vietnamese, and Caucasian. Their native language is often not English and we, as teachers, are challenged on how best to challenge these children.
One common theme with my students is their desire to learn. Teaching them, or any student now, involves creative and innovative methods to capture a child's attention and ingrain a love of math.
My Project
We need math games that concentrate on our hardest skill to learn: money and counting back change. These skills are hard for students to learn through traditional methods. My students need games and activities that integrate real world examples and that can be self-checking.
My plan is to teach and reach all my students by incorporating all 3 learning styles: auditory learning, visual learning, and experiential learners. Students will be able to get up out of their seats and do move and learn activities, they will have manipulatives, board games, interactive whiteboard software, file folder games, and a money math listening center.
Learning about money and how to count back change isn't just another standard to master, this is one of the most important skills a student can learn.
These are skills that our students will use every day for the rest of their lives. They need these materials to create a solid mathematical foundation, which they will use for the rest of their lives.
