Making History Happen

My students need 30 subscriptions to "TIME for Kids" for project inspiration, a DVD copy of Encyclopedia Britannica as well as construction paper to create projects.

My Students

Have you ever had a child look at you and tell you they don't see why history is important? I tell them that it's important because it happens everyday.

My students have struggled with making a connection with history and understanding how it relates to them.

We live in a small rural community and many students don't see much past this small town in which we live. While we live in a small town, our middle school handles all of the middle school children in the entire county, meaning large classes. In 4 class periods, I have 100 students, all unique and different - from their personalities to their learning styles.

My Project

I want to help students make a connection with history by understanding how it affects them. I want to use "TIME for Kids" to teach the students about what is happening in the world around them. I also want to use the other materials for students to learn more about the unfamiliar items in which they are interested. I want to see them create something from this newfound knowledge, something they can call their own to solidify their understanding of that piece of history. I want to make history live for them. I want them to understand how history happens everyday and that some of that history really affects them. My students will learn to be more aware of the world around them.

Helping my students achieve this awareness is one of the best things a teacher can ask for.

To know you can impact how a child sees their world is a remarkable thing. I hope you will help make that impact.
