My Students

Six dollars and seventy-five cents will buy a yard and a half of white fabric to be used as a temporary projector screen. That is exactly what I have done: I have tacked the fabric to the wall of my classroom and that is what I am using as a computer screen in my first grade classroom!

I teach a first grade class of 19 students in a Title One school in rural Maine, where fifty percent of our student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch.

Their interests vary from Boy Scouts to soccer, from Tai Kwon Do to Justin Bieber, from E-Z Bake Ovens to basketball, and from the colors pink and purple. However, what they all have in common is a love of learning, particularly through the use of technology.

My Project

Recently I was given a projector. The projector did not come with a screen and so I could not use it. So I did what any frugal and creative teacher would do: I measured the spot in my classroom where I would like the screen to be mounted, drove to my nearest fabric store, and plopped down $6.75 for white fabric, all the while promising myself that I would write a proposal to DonorsChoose for a whiteboard that can be used as a screen for the projector instead of the fabric. I will be able to project educational computer games and books onto the whiteboard and the children will be able to interact with the game and/or book by using whiteboard markers. For example, if I project a book onto the whiteboard, I can choose a student to go to the whiteboard and circle the rhyming words in the book that have been projected onto the whiteboard. Learning to read becomes fun and interactive when technology is integrated into literacy lessons.

When given the opportunity, students today gravitate towards using technology.

Having a whiteboard mounted as a projector screen will allow my students to interact with the text of projected books, play educational games, and incorporate movement into their learning.
