This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I've been teaching since 1992 in a very high poverty level area of Manhattan. It has been about 10 years since I have seen such dire need. My students need not only academically, but socially, mentally, emotionally, etc.

This has been the first time in about 8 years that I have had the highest levels of children coming in from a homeless shelter down the block where we are located.

This has also been the year where most parents are struggling financially to the point where many children come in with a great deal of hunger and physical exhaustion. I have a great group of children in extreme situations that only make them stronger and resilient. My kindergartners have taught me to be grateful in dire situations and be happy even when the reality of things hit. My class has shown me this this year. Because of this, I can only think of different ways to lighten the burden on myself and on my parents and to also show that it DOES take a community to raise a child.

My Project

These materials are basic materials found in the neighboring affluent schools not too far from us. We are in extreme need for things like crayons, glue, markers, colored pencils for the children to use and complete regular art activities within the classroom. This has been the third time this year alone I have asked the parents to please send some of these materials to the classroom and maybe about four out of a class of 17 have been able to respond without any problems. I can't be so insensitive and not realize they are in need themselves and if it came down between buying baby food and crayons they are going to buy baby food. That is why I am pleading for someone on this site to help us out with what ever they can!!!

My class would be so grateful to see that people do care for their well being and their future.

It may sound cliche, or even downright silly, to think we will just be happy to receive these materials and all our worries will be done. That will not happen, but I do know I will see smiles on my children's faces the day they see these materials come to the classroom!!!!
