Little Money Managers: Math, Money, and Finance Concepts

My students need PLASTIC COINS and PAPER MONEY to learn money and personal finance concepts like making change, working with decimals, and basic problem solving skills!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students get their hands on some money! With plastic coins and paper bills, my students will have FUN while learning basic math concepts related to money and personal finance and problem solving. The magnetic set will help me model problems for all to see no matter where they sit!

I teach 29 third-grade students at a wonderful charter school in the city.

My school has a "high-poverty" rate and many of my students have limited experience outside of the classroom with money or in lessons from family related to managing personal finances. Many of my students do not receive allowances, and are also limited in their exposure to personal savings, making change, paying sales tax, etc. My students are also still young and innocent enough to enjoy "pretend play," and would marvel at the idea of exchanging "real" money when solving real-life money problems together.

My Project

Offering plastic coins and paper money to my students as tools will help keep them engaged as I teach important basic math concepts related to money and personal finance, and money problems using decimals, addition, subtraction, fractions, and even percentages! These materials will also help me integrate mathematics into other subjects as well, like social studies, where we learn about economic concepts like bartering versus paying for goods and services outright.

This project is so important because it is an essential tool for helping students learn money concepts.

Working fluently with money is a practical life skill that so many of my students don't have - a tool like this will help all my students: from those who still need to learn the value of different coins to those who are ready to calculate interest on savings.
