Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
New England winters can get very cold and snowy resulting in a lot of "indoor recess." We need books that combine movement and literacy so that we can READ and MOVE indoors during the winter months!
Over 80% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Many of these children don't have access to the selection of reading materials that children from more affluent families take for granted. Our children have a great hunger for knowledge, but often lack the materials to fulfill this appetite.
My Project
We are requesting a collection of books that are read aloud AND allow for movement. For example... the book "From Head to Toe," by Eric Carle, is a book that has pictures of beloved animals doing movements with parts of their bodies. When children are invited to join in with moving the corresponding parts of their bodies, the book suddenly comes alive! Read aloud time becomes an opportunity to move in a fun way! Each of the books on the list was specially selected for its way of allowing teachers to introduce movement into read aloud time.
Demographics should not equal destiny.
Although my students may come from disadvantaged backgrounds and don't always have access to the latest resources, they have a desire to reach for the stars. Having a book collection like this could make a real difference.
