This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever tried to speak a new language when you have not heard the correct pronunciation of the words, the nuances of speech patterns or the sing-song way a poem sounds? Those are the challenges that many of my first graders face every day.

My school is approximately 93% free and reduced lunch and we are approximately 80% Hispanic.

Children come to us with varying backgrounds and levels of family support. A great many of our student's parents do not read or speak English. Because of this the children are not read to in English at home. During our literacy centers the children need to be able to listen to literature to develop language fluency from reading books with audiotapes.

My Project

I am requesting donations in order to purchase a listening center that will accommodate up to 8 students at a time. They will be able to listen and share with each other their experiences. Audio stories are helpful supports for my students who get their first exposure to English when they enter my classroom.

I have found that many of my students have missed out on bedtime stories being read to them in English that would increase their speaking vocabularies.

I can not rely on parent and grandparent volunteers to read to the class as they often don't have a command of the language themselves. Therefore I feel that a listening center would be a great asset to their language development.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
