Listening to Learn: Enjoying a Listening Center

My students need a listening center to supplement our reading program. We currently do not have a working cd player or enough headphones to accomplish this.

My Students

Do you remember being a child and listening to a story being read to you in a small group? Right now my kids love working on their comprehension and reading skills while reading along to a story on tape or cd. The readers find clever ways to make the story come to life!

We are a Creative Arts school and love the idea of bringing stories to life.

I also love the success listening to a story brings to a struggling reader as they follow along with the text. My students that are already readers are able to hear great examples of fluent reading and can really focus on the story elements. My class is also pretty large, 31, so we need enough headphones for small groups.

My Project

These resources would definitely make their learning so much better. Currently we have a cd player I brought from home that is so old it skips all the time and the students have to start over constantly. Last week I turned it on and it was completely dead! We also do not have enough head phones for all the students in a group to use at the same time. Our school has no money to support this extra technology we need as a part of our literacy program. Listening centers are very engaging, and the kids love going there, but it can be so frustrating to accomplish their jobs due to the lack of resources. We are currently borrowing a cd player a supervisor brought from home! Learning this way is fun for kids and helps them in so many ways.

I can't even begin to tell you how much your donation would help our classroom.

Being able to incorporate a literacy station like this is vital in the classroom. Currently schools have no money to support what needs to go on in the classrooms, and it is our kids that suffer. This is also a project that would help many kids for years to come! We could also use it for singing and dancing and calming music while we work. Please think about helping us.
