This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have a hard time choosing a new book to read, but that can change with student-created book ads! Not only will all students have a better sense of what they can read next, students will expand their understanding when creating a 30-second spot for their book.

My school is located in a socioeconomically depressed area.

Many of the students struggle with reading, and don't have the resources at home to help them improve. My students know that their education is key to rising up out of stifling poverty, but that path has many challenges. They are great kids, but they know that their station in life right now isn't great. Many of them give up and fall into apathetic routines because the challenges they face are just too great for many of them. However, when the right book is in their hands, the world opens up to them; I don't have problems with phones or MP3 players in class, but I do have to tell kids to stop reading and focus on the task at hand.

My Project

The right book in the right hands of the right student can be life-changing! We all know that kids love media, so what better way to get their attention than with 30-second book ads. These easy to use cameras will make it easier for my students to create ads for the books they've read. By posting these videos on the school website, even more students will be exposed to these texts. Not only will kids know what they could read next, the student making the spot will aim to increase their comprehension of the text to better entice their viewers. Everyone wins!

I can't say it any clearer: improving literacy changes lives.

A child who can read well, will find more success in all of their class. A more literate society is a vibrant society. Think of the last great book you ever read and the joy you received from that. That is what I want for every one of my students. You can help make that happen by making these Flip cameras available to my students. With your donation, you can change lives.
