Life From A Teenage Immigrant's Perspective

My students need 70 copies of the book, "Buried Onions," that we are all going to read together, aloud, so that they can see and hear the pronunciation of the words by a native English speaker.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Gang presence is rampant where my students live. I think my students will totally identify with the protagonist in "Buried Onions," a book about a Mexican immigrant teenager struggling to stay away from gangs. Reading this book together will lead to rich discussion.

My students are 100% English Language Learners.

They are all immigrants who came to America due to severe poverty, war, lack of education in their home countries (countries such as Nepal, Thailand, Liberia, Mexico, Guatemala, China, Ukraine, etc.). Approximately 30% are refugees or asylees. At our school, they focus on speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English every day through their regular high school content coursework.

My Project

I can't wait to read a little bit of Gary Soto's novel, "Buried Onions" each day at the beginning of class. My immigrant students are so thirsty for high-interest novels that are written at an English level that they can access. They really need their own copy in order to hear me speak the words and see the words written on the page. I am excited because the author is local and does classroom visits! This will align well with my career guest speaker series in this Career Development/College Planning class. The content of the book is highly appropriate; we live in an area greatly impacted by gang issues. The story is a bit of a coming-of-age story about an immigrant teenager from a gang impacted community. Reading this together will allow us to have a lot of rich discussion about issues in their communities, relationships with their families, and what they want for themselves after high school.

Students at my school are learning English.

With every book they read and love, their fluency grows and they become more powerful. I feel strongly that we need to read more books together. And to do this, they each need their own copy to take home. They need to hear me read the words in class as they see them written on the page. They need to take the book home and go back through it and read parts again to increase their comprehension. This high-interest book is perfect for this.
