Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How did you learn what an apple is? Did you read about it? Did you look at pictures of apples? Did you listen to someone describe the taste and feel and scent of apples? Or, did you EAT an apple? My students need to learn about our Earth, OUTSIDE the box! I want to take their education outdoors!

I teach a very busy, smart, curious bunch of four and five-year-old children.

They come from a variety of households, but most come from economically challenged families. Their lives are confined to the couch, their own backyard, if they have one, to their television. I want them to learn about the Earth, our plants and animals, and how to take care of them. My students will not learn these things sitting indoors! I want to build their vocabularies, increase their environmental awareness, and teach them to love our planet.

My Project

I want to take my students outdoors more, and offer them activities that connect what we are learning to a love of nature. The math and literacy kits can be taken out, along with outdoor clipboards to hold our lessons into the sun and grass, rather than always sitting at a table. I want to use the 4-way sand and water table to set up different learning stations, with number and letter pebbles, shapes and colors, and nature blocks. I plan to set up an observation station with thermometers, observation trays, magnifiers, bug kit, and other science tools. My students can find bugs, leaves, sticks and rocks to observe and write about in their journals. These children will feel empowered to study and protect our beautiful hill country. They will learn to appreciate the world around them, and they will learn to be stewards of the earth.

Henry David Thoreau said that, "In wilderness is the preservation of the world." I agree with him, and my students will be its caretakers.

If I can help the current generation love the Earth as I do, perhaps they will continue to learn about it and preserve it! Helping my students learn these lessons will preserve our world!
