Let's Rock with Science

My students need samples of several different igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks to use for an experiential unit study on rocks, erosion, and weathering.

My Students

My students are starved for enriching science studies that would allow them to experience, analyze, and learn more about the world around them. My hope is to inspire the next generation of scientists.

I have a classroom of low income students from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds.

These children have very little at home and rarely have the opportunity to visit museums with family or school and to participate in enriching, educational activities outside of school. Our school's focus is funding reading and mathematics, with nothing left over for science materials.

My Project

I am excited to teach a unit in which the students will use the requested rock samples to learn about and test the properties of several different minerals, study how rocks form and change, learn to classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, learn about the rock cycle, study core samples and earthquake faults, and observe the effects of weathering and erosion.

This high interest unit will give the students an opportunity to employ various scientific skills such as recording data, comparing, observing, classifying, inferring, experimenting, hypothesizing, and using models to understand the world around them.

I hope it will also inspire them to research areas of specific interest.
