My Students

Do you remember learning about verbs, nouns, adjectives, pronouns, subjects and predicates? How excited did you get? Well my students feel the same way...Boring. I need materials and resources that make these essential skills exciting and engaging to my students.

I have a very diverse classroom, both academically and economically.

My students also have very different learning styles. Teaching such a diverse group and meeting all of their needs is a challenge. I teach 5th grade in a Title I public school and many of my students struggle academically and are reading below grade level. These students tend to come from homes with few resources to aid them in school. Most of them have never left the area or state we live in. On the other hand, I have students that are working on or above grade level and need to be challenged. These students tend to come from homes with resources that enhance their learning. Despite their differences, all my students are curious and love learning about new things. I believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. I don't want my students' backgrounds to define their futures. With the right resources and opportunities, all my students can experience success and break that cycle.

My Project

I'm requesting a set of Hotdots that cover prefixes, suffixes, homophones, multiple meaning words, antonyms, synonyms and context clues. I'm also asking for one "What is Grammar" book set. I'm asking for these materials and resources to make learning about grammar and other language skills fun and engaging. Good language skills, both written and spoken, are so important. These are skills that my students will need as they leave elementary school and head to middle and high school. It can be very difficult to keep even the most motivated student engaged and focused when learning about verbs and nouns, much less struggling students. These materials will help my students to improve their writing, reading, vocabulary and speaking skills. These are skills that are also needed in math, science and social studies. These materials will allow me to work in small groups and one-on-one with my struggling students, and allow me to challenge my other students with independent assignments.

These materials and resources will go a long way in helping my students reach their true potential.

Good language and reading skills are so important if my students are to be successful. Many of my students have experienced little success in school. These resources will help me to keep them engaged and focused so they can experience success. As we know, success breeds success. Help my students break the cycle of poverty and become a success story, not a statistic.
