Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every student deserves an opportunity to read a book and be able to fully understand and study it.

I teach ELA to a self-contained class at a high poverty school in the South Bronx.

My students struggle with reading. They are not at grade level and the books that they can actually read do not interest them. Reading workshop is a struggle for them especially when it comes to reading independently. Often times the books my students can actually read because of their issues with decoding do not appeal to their adolescent minds. However, I have found that reading high interest books as a whole class where we can pause and stop to think critically about what is happening, and to work through the meaning of words does change their out look on reading.

My Project

I would like to be able to continue changing their outlook on reading by doing more guided readings as a class. In order to do this I would need to have whole class sets of particular texts. I want to particularly have a whole class book club for the books Thirteen Reasons Why and One Crazy Summer. It is amazing to hear a student say that they finally read a whole book, or tell you that they finally understand a book and actually liked it. I want to give my students the opportunity to read a book that is at a higher reading level and whose topic is actually of interest to their adolescent minds.

With your donations you would be giving my students the opportunity to fall in love with reading again.

Your donations will help them see that reading can actually be interesting and fulfilling.
