I teach ELA to a self-contained class at a high poverty school in the South Bronx. My students struggle with reading. They are not at grade level and the books that they can actually read do not interest them. Reading workshop is a struggle for them especially when it comes to reading independently. Often times the books my students can actually read because of their issues with decoding do not appeal to their adolescent minds. However, I have found that reading high interest books as a whole class where we can pause and stop to think critically about what is happening, and to work through the meaning of words does change their out look on reading.
