My Students

How do children learn? This question has stymied educators almost since time began. Each child seems to have his own unique sequence of learning. Although most regular instruction seems to work for many children, there are always those few who seem to get lost and who are doomed never to catch up.

My students are very energetic and creative elementary school students ages four to ten who come to the library once a week.

The students are from a poor inner-city neighborhood, but they come to school eager to learn new things. With all of the video games and electronic games around, it's difficult to grab their attention without using some unique and eye-catching tools. The Leapfrog Learning Company has many of these tools that capture the children's interest. Through play, they can learn about animals, geography, science, and other reading and math concepts. The boys and girls often do not even realize they are learning new skills and practicing old ones! Learning with Leapfrog is fun and exciting!

My Project

I am requesting various activities from the Leapfrog Learning Company and other companies the students and their teachers may use. In the library, we have centers where students visit from different grade-levels as a reward for good behavior. We also have after-school activities in the library where students may select centers depending on their interests and abilities. With the Leap Pad and Explorer Learning Station, the children can practice their skills independently. The handheld machines are great for individual use and for those students for whom video games are easy to manipulate. I am also requesting a TAG reader and skill games, such as Factor Frenzy and the Fridge Phonics, to review classroom skills. Other games, like Scholastic Outsmart and Number Fun Farm, practice numbers, vowels, and the alphabet. I have added protective cases to my request to keep the systems safe when not in use.

My main goal is to reach those students who need to learn in a more creative way.

I want to reach students who are bright but turned off by school. With your help, I know we can make learning fun and exciting!
