My students need 360 copies of Kindred by Octavia Butler for an engaging summer reading project.

Our school has set a big goal to make sure that EVERY student completes this year's Summer Reading Project. It all starts with choosing an ENGAGING and WELL-WRITTEN book. "Kindred" is that book. Step Two is where you come in: we want each student to get a copy of the book!
This project will support efforts at a small public charter high school focused on college preparation.
While our students hope to attend college, a big barrier that stands in their way is that they are reluctant readers. Most of them are at least a grade level behind in reading. Since we teach in a high-poverty district, the access to books is rather limited. Last summer, only 26% of students completed the Summer Reading Project, and many told us that they couldn't afford the book or get it from their local library. With this project, we will eliminate that obstacle. We've also chosen a high-interest book that will get our students excited about reading, perhaps for the first time.
"Kindred" tells the tale of a contemporary African American woman who is transported back to the antebellum south. She must learn to adjust to life with a whole new perspective. This book will help our students to understand that adaptation is a necessary skill and it could mean survival in some cases. The science fiction aspects will pull young readers into the tale that jumps between the past and present. The students will read not only for enjoyment but also for the historical significance of the book. "Kindred" will challenge students' perceptions and engage them in a masterful tale.
We want to get these books in students' hands and actually start working with them BEFORE the end of the school year.
Support this project, and these resources will be used SCHOOL-WIDE. Help us make this year's summer reading interesting, valuable, and accessible!
