My students need 2 Nook tablets.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you seen a child with autism or language delays struggle to communicate with peers or teachers in the classroom? Help this growing number of our student body increase confidence. Apps on tablets help students with special needs communicate, expand language, and improve reading and math skills.

Our inclusion program is currently K-1 and will expand to 4th grade.

20% of our population have special needs relating to language, motor, physical, social or emotional health. We employ 3 special education teachers for each grade. Learning, language, and physical specialists push in and consult with each classroom. Our students are learning computer and technology skills daily, as well as theater, movement, art, music, and physical education. We are in an urban public school in NY with most of our population receiving free or reduced lunch. Our students are creative, excited, and working to build their character and social skills along with academic skills. We work as a team and involve families in projects in and outside of class.

My Project

As many know, apps on tablets such as the IPad, Nook, Kindle or Galaxy have been created to help students with special needs. These apps can work on remedial skills for reading and math so students have 1:1 access to technology on their level. These apps also work on improving communication, expression, and language skills. Teachers and specialists can work with students 1:1 to improve in these areas. Tablets can be used in the classroom for a multitude of communication means.

We would like to experiment using tablets in small groups or 1:1 for students with special needs and ask for your help in providing this opportunity to expand communication through technology in our school.

The rate of autism and other communication disorders is increasing each year. Our population is changing. With resources like this, students will have more 1:1 experiences to strengthen, and use new communication skills.
