This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember your Kindergarten year? Students never forget the first year of their academic experience such as carpet time, house center, puppet center, recess, music, gym, stations. Do you remember seating on the floor throughout the day (Kriss cross apple sauce)?

My students are sponges in Kindergarten.

They love school at this age. Many come to school happy and excited to learn. They inspire me to be the best teacher I can be. When they finally get it and they shine from their wisdom and the new knowledge they have found, I feel so satisfied as a teacher. They may not be rich or have all they ever wanted but that does not slow down their learning in kindergarten.

My Project

When the school day begins, the students go to carpet time (the ugly dirty floor). They may sit Kriss cross apple sauce during the following activities. I write a morning message every morning that has deliberate mistakes in it. These mistakes might be word wall words spelled incorrectly, punctuation, format, capitalization, and/or grammar. I always put the number of mistakes at the top of the message so the kids know how many to be on the lookout for. Sometimes I'll leave out words that the children have to fill in that tie in with our curriculum. Sometimes I'll have an interactive morning message where they make tally marks to answer a question or have to find the answer to a math problem. They are expected to read the morning message independently when they first arrive. During morning meeting, we do a greeting, read the message, and find the mistakes. I lead morning meeting for the first quarter to model how it should run, and then after that I have the kids take turns doing it. We need a carpet for my students to sit on during our carpet time.

They would love to have a designated assigned carpet area. They would know exactly where they must be during carpet time and instruction. Can you find the letter F or the number 5?
