Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our computer lab has been moved into the basement where it is extremely hot. Being on the ground floor, we are unable to put air conditioners into the windows for security reasons. Therefore, our lab has computers that are 7 years old and overheat. In order to save the lab, we need a cool climate.
I teach computer technology to Kindergarten-5th grade high-need, low-income students in a large, urban, public school district in New Jersey.
Our students are primarily Hispanic, and include a high number of special education students. More than 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our students are technology disadvantaged, both at home and at school, because they do not have access to a variety of new devices like other Americans. Essentially, they only have computers, and in today's workforce nearly every job uses a computer of some sort. It is essential that our students have an opportunity to use other devices to simulate real-world experiences.
My Project
The need for an air conditioner is essential for the computer lab. Being on the ground floor, our windows have wire bars to prevent vandalism and theft. Therefore, they are unable to install them in the windows. Being in a lab all day with 24 computers running is hot by itself. The sun hits directly into the lab and makes it even worse. The conditions in the lab become very uncomfortable for the students to work in all year round. Anyone who ever steps foot in the lab says..."OMG it is so hot in here, how do you stand it?" The computers are 7 years old and the fans are beginning to run high because of the heat. In order to save our lab, having a cooler climate for our equipment is so important. Our students deserve to come to a comfortable room and enjoy learning.
Computer technology offers us a unique way to inspire hard-to-reach students and help them learn and grow.
Having a cool climate and keeping our computers maintained, will help students understand how important it is to take pride in their school. They need to know that the equipment they use is purchased for their benefit and needs to be taken care of. This gives them a way to see how the world works and know that you have to work hard for everything you have!
