My students need 25 yoga balls and materials like weighted lap pads, liquid timers, and sensory fidgets for them to take short breaks from the classroom when they are angry, upset, or need time to get themselves back on track.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The average day in my class involves students having a hard time keeping their minds, mouths, and bodies focused to help them learn the most they possibly can. We take periodic brain breaks throughout the day to try to incorporate movement and give students a chance to live up to their potential.

My students live on the east side of Baltimore city, most of them living in low-income, Section 8 housing.

My students come from very different backgrounds, and a good amount of them are English Language Learners. My school is extremely old, and I strive every day to make my classroom a warm and inviting place that we all share and love.

My Project

Children who sit on stability balls instead of traditional desk chairs show increased focus and ability to pay attention to their lessons. This is especially seen in kids who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, according to research published in "The American Journal of Occupational Therapy." Children with ADHD often display a shorter-than-normal attention span and frequent fidgeting. Sitting on the ball allows students some movement as they learn. The slight body adjustments required to balance on the ball are natural and non-disruptive and provide an outlet for excess energy. The increased focus and movement that stability balls provide in school can lead to higher levels of productivity. The other material, such as weighted blankets, sensory fidgets, and calming liquid timers, are for students that may or may not have ADHD who require a quick break from the daily routine, so they can refocus, control anger, and learn to self-regulate their own bodies.

Expecting a child to stay seated for such a long period of time is extremely difficult. Providing them with the tools to be more successful will help our classroom community to grow in every way.
