My Students

Did you ever feel like everyone else knew something you didn't? That's how my students feel every day. They all have autism spectrum disorders, which keeps them out of the loop socially. But they also have reading disabilities, which keeps them out of the loop academically too.

My students are middle-schoolers in a full inclusion program.

This means that instead of going to special education classes, they learn alongside non disabled students in regular classes. They work on much of the same things as everyone else, but some of their work is modified. One thing that everyone in our middle school does is read every day, my students included. However, because of their lower reading levels, much of what they have to read is too young for them. They can't read the award winning young adult fiction their friends are reading. They can't participate in the discussions other kids, and sometimes whole classes are having about amazing books like Hunger Games, Diary of a Part-Time Indian, or Wintergirls. They simply can't read these books, no matter how much they want to. This further alienates them from peers.

My Project

If my classroom had ipods, my students could use them to check out audiobooks from the library, and listen to them while they read along in the book. This kind of paired reading improves comprehension by targeting both the visual and auditory cortex. It improves reader confidence, and allows kids to read above their reading level. Additionally, many of our textbooks (Science, Social Studies, Health) have audiobook versions available, but in the past we have had no devices for students to listen to them on. With access to ipods my students will be able to read grade level fiction, and read their textbooks for class. This will improve their confidence as readers and allow them to connect socially with their peers.

My students are at a great disadvantage socially and academically, but they have a great desire to learn and make friends.

Helping them read what everyone else is reading lets them into the secret club everyone else is already in. This raises their confidence and will help them achieve greater success.
