My Students

I teach journalism in an urban high school. We need ipads to be able to access the Internet. Journalism is a rapidly changing field, and technology is an integral part of it. I want my students to really embrace their first amendment rights to free press, but today technology is a key part of that.

My students represent a hugely diverse cross section of our culture.

Many of them are poor and have limited access to technology. They are bright and eager to learn and just need the right tools. Our school has published a newspaper since 1942. We still publish a print edition, but we need to expand to the Internet as well.

My Project

My students will use these ipads to access the Internet. We will create blogs and communicate with other journalists. They will publish their own articles on line. They will access interactive websites such as newsu.org and newsela.com as well as the NY Times. Some students who many not read the print edition will get excited about the ipad edition of the paper. This will really get kids ready to embrace the first amendment.

Currently each of my classes has 34 students.

We only have 9 ipads. We need more so that each student can get access to the Internet. The lessons the students will complete will teach them good cyber citizenship. They will become responsible internet users who can conduct research and express themselves in a meaningful way.
